"We had a very successful day today, raising over $3,000 for our mission projects," said Rita Mintmier, of Cedar Square Friends Meeting. "We still have thousands of socks left, and will continue the sale this week."

Additional sale dates are from 10 a.m. to noon and 6 to 8 p.m. today (May 13) and Friday, May 14.

Currently, the meeting has three young women actively serving in the mission field, two in Australia and one doing inner city mission work in San Francisco.

They also support Friends ministries at home and overseas, and those who work with the Friends Disaster Service, helping rebuild after hurricanes, floods and earthquakes.

Another recent missions project includes buying supplies for Refugee Welcome Kits, used for Haitians relocated in the U.S. These consist of brooms, mops, light bulbs, detergent and cleaning supplies. The drop off site for these kits is the Allen Jay House in High Point.

To help finance these missions, the meeting will continue to sell dozens of textile goods donated by a local hosiery mill.

Among the inventory are 35 dozen pairs of gloves, 13 dozen pajamas, 51 dozen pairs of mittens, 265 dozen rompers, 70 dozen sleepers, 2,500 laundry baskets and thousands of pairs of socks of various types and sizes.

“The volume is really quite impressive and somewhat overwhelming,” Mintmier told the NEWS.

Everything is new, not used, and includes collegiate, holiday and Sesame Street merchandise.

Mintmier said they still have great bargains to offer shoppers, such as all the socks you can stuff in a bag for $5 and other items priced for quick sale.

The meeting is at 7546 Harlow Road in Archdale.
