STAFF REPORTS
In the Archdale area, CIS and the Archdale Community Appearance Commission partnered to plant autumn blaze maple trees at John Lawrence, Trindale and Archdale elementary schools in honor of Arbor Day, March 19.
Archdale Code Enforcement Officer Zeb Holden, the city liaison with the Commission, supervised the planting and told third graders at each school about the history of Arbor Day. He explained the parts of the tree, compared how fast and large different varieties grow and answered the “interesting” questions. He gave the students instructions about the care and watering of their school’s special tree.
Each student then received a longleaf pine seedling and planting instructions to take home.
The Fast Forward Academy at Archdale-Trinity Middle School assisted CIS by packaging the seedlings in plastic sleeves. Fast Forward, a CIS program, allows seventh graders to do two years of curriculum and advance to the ninth grade. Part of their curriculum includes community service.
Caylan Hulin, Darrell Wallace and Aaron Tiller were on hand to watch the planting and hand out the seedlings at John Lawrence Elementary. The trio agreed that it feels good to “give back” to their community.
Gossett’s Landscape Nursery provided the maple trees and Lowe’s Home Improvement donated the soil and mulch.
Litter Sweep April 17
The city of Archdale and the Community Appearance Commission invite everybody to come out for Litter Sweep Saturday, April 17. Participants spend a morning picking up litter to improve the city’s appearance, improve stormwater flow and keep water sources clean.
Participants should meet at 7:30 a.m. at McDonald’s restaurant in Archdale. Trash bags, vests and some gloves will be provided. Bring work gloves if possible.
Groups and organizations can join in or plan their own litter pick-up day. For more information, call Zeb Holden at 434-7333.
ATMS Environmental Day April 17
The Archdale-Trinity Middle School Environmental Club will host Environmental Community Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at the Archdale Public Library.
A ribbon cutting will introduce the new rain garden, constructed by students in the club.
Callie Mathis, a member, told Archdale City Council that the day will include environmental activities and guest speakers, and people can learn how to reduce their carbon footprint.
Faculty adviser Sarah Fuller said that the students are not only building the rain garden, but also planning the event and activities themselves.
