Old friends greeted each other in the hall — all THS alumni, with children now attending both schools.
“They played tooth and nail against each other,” said WHS Head Coach David Spell, nodding towards Wheatmore’s Keegan Dunn and Trinity’s Matt Watkins as they walked out of the locker rooms together after the game. “And they’re good friends.”
The Bulldogs bolted ahead for an 8-point lead in the first quarter before Dunn put the Warriors on the scoreboard. With foul shots, Wheatmore crept up to within one point during the second quarter, but Daulton Rogers and Watkins pulled Trinity ahead, 20-16 at halftime.
The Bulldogs widened the gap in the third, which ended at 36-23. The Warriors chased the ’Dogs in the final quarter, with Brett Ozment and Dakota White scoring 3-pointers. Ray Edwards’ free throw brought the score to within three points as an enthusiastic Warrior crowd thought the tide might have turned. But Trinity’s Rhyne Kivett and Shane Loeffler made their free throws, for a final score of 48-41.
Trinity Head Coach Tim Kelly complimented the Warriors on their efforts. “We sort of let our guard down, and then they started playing really well,” he said.
Spell said his team played hard the entire game. “If we play like that, I don’t care what the score was,” he said. “Anytime you play that good against Trinity, you’ve got to be proud.”
Watkins led Bulldog scoring with 20 points. David Clausel scored 8 points and Shane Loeffler and Nathan Willett added 6 each.
Ray Edwards led the Warriors with 13 points. Keegan Dunn added 9 and Dakota White, 7.
Trinity’s junior varsity boys won against Wheatmore 53-38.
Wheatmore’s junior varsity girls truimphed over Trinity 46-19.
