There were laughs and jokes, smiles and winks, and surprisingly few tears as the City of Trinity bid farewell to two of its elected officials and welcomed newcomers, including recently elected Mayor Carlton Boyles.

City Manager Ann Bailie presided over the farewells for former Mayor Fran Andrews and Councilwoman Edith Reddick. Each was presented with a plaque, the minutes of their first City Council meetings and a heartfelt hug.

“We are all going miss their dedicated service,” Bailie told the audience.

Boyles took the oath of office surrounded by students from the fourth grade class in which he volunteers. Newly elected Councilman Tommy Johnson of Ward 4, who takes the retiring Reddick’s place, was supported by his wife, and Councilwoman Kristen Varner of Ward 1 was surrounded by her husband and children.

Councilman Barry Lambeth of Ward 2 and Councilwoman Karen Bridges of Ward 3, both of whom were re-elected, also took their oaths of office.

During the meeting, Boyles and Council made appointments to vacant or expiring advisory board seats.

Vernel Gibson was reappointed to the Planning and Zoning Board to represent Ward 1. New appointees include Guy Marino, representative of Ward 1; David Albertson, Ward 2; Rick Peele, Ward 3; and Woody Gordon, Ward 4.

Outgoing mayor Fran Andrews was appointed to the Infrastructure and Parks and Recreation Board to represent Ward 1. Mike Robertson was reappointed as the Ward 3 representative.

A vacant seat remains in Ward 2 and two vacant seats remain in Ward 4, including the one recently held by Johnson.

Anyone who wishes to be considered for a seat should download an application from the city’s Web site, www.trinity-nc.gov.

Darrin Shaffer, Ward 1, was appointed to the Public Safety Board.

Other appointments were made. At the Council’s request, Boyles will fill a seat on the High Point Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Technical Advisory Committee and serve as a delegate to the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments.

Boyles then appointed Linda Gantt, Barry Lambeth and Tyler Earnst to the Council’s Budget and Finance Committee. Karen Bridges, Kelly Grooms and Tommy Johnson were appointed to the Personnel Committee.

Boyles initially appointed Councilman Robbie Sikes as the liaison to the Planning and Zoning Board, but Sikes declined.

“I’m sorry, I’m going to have to decline due to a time conflict,” Sikes told Boyles.

Boyles then appointed Councilman Barry Lambeth as liaison to the Planning and Zoning Board, Councilman Kelly Grooms as liaison to the Infrastructure and Parks and Recreation Board and Councilwoman Kristen Varner as liaison to the Public Safety Board.

Afterward, Lambeth made a request.

“Mayor Boyles, would you mind if Kelly and I switched?” Lambeth asked. “I have served on Infrastructure and he on P&Z for the past couple of years, and we know those areas better.”

Boyles agreed. Lambeth and Grooms will continue to serve in the same capacity as in prior years.
