Jennie Hinson, student advocate and dropout prevention coordinator at Archdale-Trinity Middle School, has been swamped with requests for help with holiday gifts for students. If she can’t find any sponsors who will agree to help the families, Hinson knows she can depend on the SerCo Club.

“If I call Stan Byrd at the last minute, he just asks me what they need,” said Hinson. “SerCo has never turned away anyone; they have never turned me down.”

The SerCo Club, which manages the Archdale-Trinity Cheer Fund, doesn’t want to turn anyone down, said Stan Byrd Sr., but this year they are way behind on donations.

“We are the furthest behind that we have ever been,” Byrd said Monday. “Many of the businesses which usually donate are struggling just to keep their doors open.”

The goal is $25,000 with $20,000 in cash. As of Friday, donations totaled $9,624. Last year, the Cheer Fund at this time of year had hit the $12,000 mark.

The shortfall comes at a time when the SerCo Club is trying to help a multitude of families. In some cases, both parents are out of work.

“We are hearing about more people who are behind on their rent,” Byrd said. “And we just don’t have the funds to help them.”

In addition to their normal procedure of asking individuals and businesses for donations, the SerCo Club held a spaghetti dinner at First Baptist Church of Archdale to kick off the Archdale-Trinity Cheer Fund.

A fundraiser event was held Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Davis Arena in Archdale. Decorated trees were auctioned off.

“We paired up with Team Austin,” said Deanna Byrd, a SerCo member. “We split the donations between Team Austin and the Cheer Fund.”

Team Austin is raising money for Austin Reddick, who needs a bone marrow transplant to treat leukemia.

Byrd does not want to turn anyone away this year.

“If people can’t give what they normally do, if they could just give a percentage it would help out a lot,” he said. “We would still be extremely grateful.”

How to donate and a list of contributors are on page 12.
