The little boy waved his arms to stop the truck that SerCo Santa used to make his rounds. The SerCo crew had stopped by his house an hour or so before and left him a stocking. What could he want now?

He handed SerCo Santa a thank you note. “I can’t believe you brought me what I wanted,” he wrote. It was a small toy airplane.

While SerCo Club members work year-round to help those in need, it’s moments like this that define the purpose of the Archdale-Trinity Cheer Fund, said SerCo Santa, aka Stan Byrd Jr. It’s also a moment when SerCo members recommit themselves to help families who need food, shelter, heat and sometimes medical care.

SerCo Santa will make his usual appearance at Stan Byrd Realtors at the corner of Main Street and Laura
Avenue from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 19. All children are welcome. After that hour, the troops head to some of the poorer areas of Archdale and Trinity to give away food and toys.

Some of the families who do not ask for help need it more than those who do ask for help, Byrd said. “It blows your mind.”

SerCo Santa has been a community tradition for about 20 years and the joy has multiplied every year — even when Santa did a backflip in the box truck because an elf braked a little too hard. Forget the white beard, Byrd said, boots and butt tumbled across the truck floor.

Even with a few bruises, aches and pains, SerCo Club members know this with certainty: It’s all worth the hug from a little boy who got his Christmas wish of a toy airplane.

Contributors have several options to help the club meet its $25,000 goal. Donations are tax deductible. Checks should be made payable to the Archdale-Trinity Cheer Fund and may be mailed to P.O. Box 4956, Archdale, NC 27263, or dropped off at Stan Byrd Realtors, 10468 N. Main St., Suite B, at Archdale Drug or given to a SerCo Club member.

For more information about the Cheer Fund or SerCo Club, call 442-1268.
