Fireman Jake Mills must have had one of the biggest cheering sections in the two-year history of the “Best Basketball Bash” competition held by the Rotary Club of Archdale-Trinity.

Paul Mills, 4, yelled “Go firemans” from the stands as his Uncle Jake helped to lead the team to a 56-40 victory over the Archdale Police Department.

The game was played at Archdale Parks and Recreation Center July 31.

The police declared the 11-member team as “ringers.” Maybe, there was one. Mike Witcher, assistant fire chief by day (and some nights), acted as coach.

He’s experienced at coaching 10-year-olds.

Witcher walked the sidelines as the “firemans” loaded the scoreboard. Chief Brian Cox even contributed a few 3-pointers, albeit while wearing a knee brace.

One police officer was “injured,” but firemen came to the rescue with a splint for the jammed finger. The police officer continued in the game.

As the game finished, the public servants shook hands, but Witcher had to add an additional comment:

“Everybody knows all cops want to be firemen, but couldn’t pass the test.”

The teams are even now. Last year, the police department claimed the victory.

There’s one strong conclusion in this friendly game: The winner is the community. Proceeds from this event will fund the Rotary Club’s local and international projects.
