HIGH POINT — A new use has been proposed for a former industrial property in southwest High Point.
Anthony Harris told the Planning and Zoning Commission on Tuesday that he wants to open a barbershop at 1700 W. Green Drive.
The board unanimously approved his request to rezone the 1.58-acre site from heavy industrial to light industrial.
The new zoning will allow Harris to use part of the 3,200-square-foot building, which includes an existing automotive repair facility already in operation.
The site is bounded by Dorris Avenue and Textile Place.
The new zoning would accommodate other potential plans for the building, such as an event venue and embroidery shop.
The commission also unanimously endorsed a request from the High Point Housing Authority to rename part of a street for High Point native Fantasia Barrino, a famous singer and actress.
Edmondson Place between N. University Parkway and Underhill Street would be renamed Fantasia Avenue under the proposal. The street traverses the site of the new Legacy Ridge housing community, which is under construction.
The housing authority owns all the property on both sides of the portion of the street that would be renamed.
Tuesday’s vote found that the requested renaming has merit and set the date of May 28 for a public hearing and possible final action by the commission on the request.
